Thyroid ultrasound

Thyroid Ultrasound

The thyroid is small gland at the front of the neck. It is involved in regulating a large number of body functions. An ultrasound scan is the best test for assessing the structure of the gland. A probe is passed over the neck to obtain views from multiple angles. The size of the thyroid, the number and size of any nodules, and extent of blood flow can be assessed.

No preparation is required for this scan. Please bring previous CT, ultrasound and thyroid scans for comparison.

Thyroid Biopsy

Ultrasound can be used during fine needle biopsy to obtain tissue samples from thyroid nodules. Although most thyroid nodules are benign, a small minority may harbour cancer cells. Biopsies are usually taken if the nodules are large or have shown significant growth over time. This procedure requires special preparation.

For best results a recent thyroid ultrasound is needed for procedural planning. To reduce the risk of excessive bleeding, please discontinue blood-thinning medications (in consultation with your referring doctor).

All thyroid ultrasound scans and procedures are bulk-billed.
